Throughout this Sport Marketing course there were several aspects that I learned which would benefit me substantially in my future. This class had several concepts that are similar to the Management 309 course that is required for the business minor. Most of the students were taking that class or already took it so the information covered was not brand new. Furthermore, the information was easily identifiable to us. The class examples, videos, slides, and conversations were all things we could relate to. Examples that used Texas A&M gave me the best understanding because it was a real life example which we are currently in. Marketing changes at a rapid pace from the first blog we did my organization reebok had profound changes even within the past few years. They must be able to realize their surroundings and take advantage of them.
As most know, the field of sport management is significantly widespread in the ways we can use our degrees. I personally haven’t made a decision for which specific field in sport management I want to go into which this class has given me a better perspective of working with the marketing side. Consumer may not always view a product a certain way but from a marketing perspective it’s a whole new dimension. I had changed my major two times before finding out about this major and it seemed to fit right in because most of the time I’m either talking or watching sports. A lot of thought and consideration comes into play when considering something like a promotion. Brand and image are key factors that one tries to keep at a high stage but like the product life cycle shows, must be able to adapt and adjust if you don’t want to hit the decline stage.
My favorite section this semester was the “Sponsorship & Endorsement” which combined sports with different sponsoring companies. It attracted my attention because being able to work with clubs, athletes and corporations is sort of a competition of trying to sign the best. We also see it around us everyday which could also be a negative effect. We are swarmed with advertisement all day, which makes it harder to put an advertisement and have a message go through the way its intended.
Lastly, our blogs that we created throughout the semester really made me think about sport marketing and how it was used in everyday life. Initially it seemed overwhelming to write so much especially with other classes during semester. However, once I got acquired to writing, ideas came to my mind much quicker. I haven’t had a writing intensive class in a quite some time to this has definitely sharpened my writing skills. Even though I did struggle through some parts, I was given feedback on what I needed to fix instead of taking a class and just receiving a letter grade making me figure out what I needed to do. I have been exposed to using a SWOT analysis before, however I actually was able to fully comprehend the use during our second blog. I realized it was sort of a challenge for some organizations to bring new ideas to set themselves apart from the competition. This let us apply knowledge and think from a different angle from what we're used to.
Overall, this class gave me a significant amount of new knowledge that most certainly will positively affect my future. Even talking about sports in general for our marketing minute gave me good insight on what is going around us in sports. Having conversations with general fans is engaging but when you’re talking with someone who knows more than you in sports make it much more entertaining. Having a small class made that much easier to comprehend and in a sense laid back so we could all have our opinions compared to other courses. There was vast more information and knowledge that I gained throughout the course that a single textbook could cover within the span of a semester. It almost seemed like I didn’t want to miss a class because I would miss the discussions that came along with the lectures. The future is hard to predict but going through this course, it gave me a better understanding of what is going to come from the future. I expect to see a significant amount of change and if there isn’t much change, must be able to be consistent and be able to compete with those coming up. Certainly one of the best courses for the sport management program.
